If you are installing Comet in a network environment you must install your server first. Once the server is setup and all the workstations connect to the server you install Comet on the workstations.

CometServerProducts.exe

The InstallShield Wizard™ will guide you through the steps required to install the files necessary for a Comet File and/or Security Server. You will be asked to "Browse" to the folder where you want CometServerProducts.exe to install the files. Then you can choose to setup the server as a Security Server and/or a File Server. When installing a Security Server, you need to select either a USB or parallel security dongle. The files installed in the selected folder are:

File Server executables: CfileServe.exe and CFAMNetServe.exe
Security Server executable: CSecSrv.exe
USB dongle setup and diagnostic utilities: CbSetup.exe and CbUSB.exe
Parallel dongle installation files: CometKMD.inf and CometKMD.sys
Service installation files and executable: CometNTService.ini, CometNTService.log, and CometNTService.exe
InstallShieldTM components: InstallHelper.dll and Uninst.isu
ServerInstall.exe - a separate installation utility replacing CSAdmin.exe.

Note: You should not need to run this for Comet 2004 users. CometServerProducts.exe will install everything you need.

CometServerProducts.exe also installs in your Windows System folder and registers the Dlls required for your security dongle and other dlls required for the server programs to run. These DLLs are provided by Microsoft: mfc42.dll, mfc70.dll, msvcirt.dll, msvcp70.dll, msvcr70.dll, and msvcrt.dll.

You will be instructed to reboot your computer when installation is complete.

CometWorkstation.exe

This InstallShield Wizard™ guides you through the steps required to install and register the files necessary for a Comet workstation. You will be asked to choose from two installation types:

  1. Run Comet from program files that will be installed on this computer, also called Full Install
  2. Run Comet from program files that were previously installed on another computer on your network, referred to as Workstation Install.

A Full Install must be run with each upgrade. The Full Install copies all the updated executable files to your Comet start up folder. This start up folder is typically located on the installation's file server; in a single workstation environment the start up folder will, of course, be located on the disk of the workstation.

In a network installation, the Workstation Install is run on each workstation except the initial workstation from which the Full Install was run. In many cases it may not be necessary to run the Workstation Install at all. In an upgrade situation the Microsoft DLLs will have been installed in the past and it will not be necessary to do anything at the workstations. When doing an upgrade in a location with many workstations located in a physically large plant the installer can usually avoid doing a workstation install at the remote locations.

You will be given the option of having a shortcut to Comet created on your desktop. If you select this option you will be asked to "Browse" to the folder containing your Comet configuration file (.CFG) so the "/PN=" argument can be included in your shortcut.

You will also be asked to "Browse" to the folder where you want CometWorkstation.exe to install the files. Browse to the Start Up folder; the address that will be coded as the Target in the Comet Desktop Shortcut. In a network installation, the Target folder is located on the server and all the workstations Comet systems get their executable files from the server. The files installed in the Start Up folder are:

  • Startup executable: Comet.exe
  • Comet kernel executables: CosC.exe, CosH.exe, CosP.exe, and CosW.exe
  • File System executables: Cfam.exe and CfileSrv.exe
  • Comet debugger: CosD.exe
  • Comet Anywhere Update program: CAUPD.exe
  • Fax driver: FaxDriver.exe
  • ODBC driver: ODBCdrv.exe
  • Dynamic Link Libraries: CosHipc.dll, DIBAPI32.dll, ODBCd.dll, and UniDrv.dll
  • Data Definition Language files: Crt.ddl, System.ddl, and WinPrint.ddl

The program also installs the following files into the workstation's Windows System folder and registers the dlls Comet requires:

  • Comet dlls: CometPV.dll, CometLib.dll, and CapiServ.dll
  • Microsoft dlls: mfc42.dll, mfc70.dll, msvcirt.dll, msvcp60.dll, msvcp70.dll, msvcr70.dll, msvcrt.dll, and msvbvm60.dll

You will be instructed to reboot the workstation when the installation is complete.
